Michael J. McLaughlin

Michael J. McLaughlin is one of New England’s brightest and most accomplished young sculptors. A former student at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Art in Old Lyme, McLaughlin has also completed an apprenticeship with Juan Andreu and has traveled extensively through Thailand, Korea, and Japan. McLaughlin now lives in Litchfield County, Connecticut, where he produces his enigmatic and intricate bronze sculptures.

McLaughlin’s formal education, his apprenticeship with Andreu, and his travels in Asia all contributed to his unique view of harmony’s role in nature. Pamela Siemon of Fenn Gallery writes, “He examines the simplicity and complexity which co-exists by way of the creative spirit using a traditional medium in a refreshingly innovative manner.” What intrigues us about his work is the combination of whimsy and compelling form – one that can be solid, such as The Singular Penguin or The Partridge Hen, or almost ethereal, such as Rain is Everywhere. Either way, McLaughlin’s work achieves both a measure of delight and subtle poignancy.
